King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
“Proceeded” means “added”: Elihu’s speech enters as another layer in an exchange already underway.
THE MEANING
Elihu (אֱלִיהוּא, ʾElihu, “My God is he”) adds his voice and speaks. The Hebrew verb behind “proceeded” means “add” or “continue,” so this utterance joins words already in motion. The verse meets the reader where another voice enters an unfinished conversation.
THE ROOT
וַיֹּסֶף
vayyōsef
GROWS FROM
יָסַף
yāsaf
To add, increase, or continue by doing again.
“proceeded” in this verse is vayyōsef. The Hebrew verb holds both continuing and adding together: Elihu does not simply move forward; he adds another word to what is already being said. The same root appears in a name and in phrases about increasing praise and understanding, revealing speech as one more addition to an unfolding whole.
ALSO GROWS
Yosef: “May he add.”
יוֹסֵף
The name carries the same root as “proceeded,” linking Elihu’s added speech to the language of addition.
hosif: “He added” or “he increased.”
הוֹסִיף
This form makes the root’s central action explicit: what follows can enlarge what is already present.
THE PATTERN
What is already present can deepen through addition: understanding, praise, and speech grow as more is added.
A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:But I will hope continually, and will yet praise thee more and more. And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;THE THREAD
And she called his name Joseph; and said, The LORD shall add to me another son.Joseph is יוֹסֵף (Yosef, “may he add”), from יָסַף (yāsaf, “to add”). Genesis makes the root audible in both the name and the verb; here that same seed describes Elihu adding another voice to the exchange.
