THE KEY
The creature’s scale makes the Jordan itself something it trusts it can drink.
THE MEANING
The verse enlarges your measure of what is overwhelming: the river that looks immense from one scale is drink to another. The creature does not hurry; it trusts it can draw the Jordan into its mouth. The water remains a river, while the creature’s capacity changes what that river means in the scene.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the assumption that what is vast to you must be vast in every frame of reference.
THE ROOT
יִבְטַח
yivtaḥ
GROWS FROM
בטח
b-ṭ-ḥ
To be secure, feel safe, or be confident.
The root gives “trusteth” the felt quality of security: the creature is confident enough to face a whole river without haste. Confidence here belongs to what it can take in, not to an abstract idea detached from the scene.
ALSO GROWS
beṭaḥ: Security; safely.
בֶּטַח
The noun names the secure state carried by the verb: the creature’s confidence has the feel of being safe.
mivṭaḥ: Refuge; confidence.
מִבְטָח
This branch links trust with a place or source of security, deepening the verse’s picture of confidence grounded in capacity.
יַגִּיחַ
yāgîaḥ
GROWS FROM
גיח
g-y-ḥ
To burst forth or rush out.
“draw up” in this verse is yāgîaḥ. The KJV image of drawing up the Jordan carries a Hebrew verb of forceful emergence: יָגִיחַ (yāgîaḥ, rushes or bursts forth). The water is not merely a quantity to drink; the word also lets its surge press vividly into the image.
ALSO GROWS
wayyāgîaḥ: Broke forth; burst out.
וַיָּגִיחַ
Job 38:8 uses this form for the sea breaking forth as if from a womb, giving the river’s surge here a shared image of forceful emergence.
Gîḥôn: Gihon, a river name commonly connected with gushing forth.
גִּחוֹן
The river name preserves the same sense of water emerging in a rush.
יַרְדֵּן
Yardēn
GROWS FROM
ירד
y-r-d
To descend or go down.
The name Jordan is connected with ירד (y-r-d, descend), so its name carries the motion of downward flow. In this verse, that named descending river becomes the measure of what the creature trusts it can take into its mouth.
ALSO GROWS
yārad: To descend; go down.
יָרַד
The verb preserves the movement carried in the river’s name.
yōrēd: One descending; going down.
יוֹרֵד
This participle makes the root’s motion visible as an ongoing descent, echoing the river’s flow.
THE PATTERN
The created world contains lives and forces whose scale exceeds human command.
Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down?So is this great and wide sea, wherein are things creeping innumerable, both small and great beasts. And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?THE THREAD
Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb?Job 40:23 uses יָגִיחַ (yāgîaḥ, rush or burst forth) for the Jordan’s movement; Job 38:8 uses וַיָּגִיחַ (wayyāgîaḥ, broke forth) as the sea emerges from the womb. The river at the creature’s mouth and the sea’s birth share one motion-word: forceful emergence.
