What Does Job 40:7 Mean in the King James?
Gird up thy loins now like a man: I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The final command turns the demand back on Job: the one who asks for an answer must now make the questioner know.
THE MEANING
You stand inside a question rather than outside it. The line asks you to answer the one who questions you, and its final verb sharpens the demand: make the questioner know. Its pressure lies in the difference between asking for an account and being able to give one.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It dissolves the belief that the one demanding an answer is exempt from being answerable: the demand returns to you, asking what you can make known.
THE ROOT
הוֹדִיעֵנִי
hôdîʿēnî
GROWS FROM
י־ד־ע
y-d-ʿ
To know, recognize, or perceive.
The Hebrew form means “make me know,” from the root ידע (yada), “to know or perceive.” The English “declare” carries this deeper demand: Job is asked to bring the questioner into knowledge.
ALSO GROWS
daʿat: Knowledge
דַּעַת
This noun from the same root makes explicit that the command concerns what can be known.
yōdēaʿ: One who knows
יֹדֵעַ
This form shows the root describing a knower, while the verse asks Job to make the questioner know.
גֶּבֶר
gever
GROWS FROM
ג־ב־ר
g-b-r
To be strong or prevail.
The word translated “man” is gever, linked to strength and prevailing. That adds force to the challenge: Job is told to take a strong stance and answer under questioning.
ALSO GROWS
gāvar: Prevail, become strong
גָּבַר
The verb reveals the strength carried in the description “like a man.”
gibbôr: Mighty one
גִּבּוֹר
This related word echoes the forceful posture demanded of Job.
THE PATTERN
Girded loins picture readiness to meet a question or a task.
Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning;Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;THE THREAD
Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.Job 38:3 repeats the same girding command and challenge to answer. Read beside Job 40:7, the repeated words make the demand persistent: Job is summoned again to answer, now with the closing challenge to make the questioner know.
