What Does Job 41:10 Mean in the King James?
None is so fierce that dare stir him up: who then is able to stand before me?
The analysis reads the King James wording.
King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The creature no one dares provoke is only the opening measure; the deeper question is who can hold their ground in God’s presence.
THE MEANING
The verse places a force beyond human reach beside the One before whom no creature can claim equal footing. What overwhelms human power does not become ultimate; its scale makes the speaker’s authority visible.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that the most fearsome force in view must be the highest authority. Even Leviathan’s terrifying power is measured against the One before whom all stand.
THE ROOT
יִתְיַצָּב
yityatzev
GROWS FROM
יצב
To stand firm, take one’s position, or be set in place.
“stand” in this verse is yityatzev. This verb form describes taking a position, not merely remaining upright. The question is who can hold their ground in the speaker’s presence.
ALSO GROWS
hitziv: To set or station something.
הִצִּיב
The root can describe placing something in position; here it turns to whether anyone can take a position before God.
hityatzev: To present oneself or take a stand.
הִתְיַצֵּב
This form makes the encounter personal: who can place themselves before the speaker and remain there?
לְפָנַי
lefanai
GROWS FROM
פנה
To turn or face toward; the related word פנים means face or presence.
“Before me” carries the sense of being faceward, in someone’s presence. The verse pictures not an abstract test of strength but a direct encounter.
ALSO GROWS
panim: Face; also presence.
פָּנִים
This related word brings the face into “before me”: standing before God means being in the field of God’s presence.
panah: To turn or turn toward.
פָּנָה
The root gives the encounter a direction: the question is who can face toward the speaker and stand.
THE PATTERN
No creature’s force escapes the Creator’s command, even when it exceeds human power.
And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed? There go the ships: there is that leviathan, whom thou hast made to play therein. And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?THE THREAD
And the LORD descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD.The same Hebrew root for “stand” appears in both verses. Job asks who can take a stand before God; Exodus describes the LORD standing with a person and proclaiming the LORD’s name.
