What Does Job 42:8 Mean in the King James?
Therefore take unto you now seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and my servant Job shall pray for you: for him will I accept: lest I deal with you after your folly, in that ye have not spoken of me the thing which is right, like my servant Job.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The man whose speech is affirmed becomes the one who intercedes for those whose speech is called folly.
THE MEANING
Repair includes both naming the wrong and making a way back: the friends bring offerings, and Job’s intercession becomes part of their acceptance. Their words are called folly because they fail to speak rightly about God, while Job is recognized as having done so.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the lie that being wrong leaves no path back to acceptance: the friends’ folly is named plainly, yet the verse gives them a way toward repair through offering and intercession.
THE ROOT
יִתְפַּלֵּל
yitpallel
GROWS FROM
פלל
p-l-l
Intervene or mediate; in the hitpael form used here, intercede in prayer.
“pray” in this verse is yitpallel. English prayer can sound like private speech directed upward, but this form places Job between his friends and God’s judgment. The person whose speech is affirmed becomes the one who intercedes for them, making prayer here part of their repair.
ALSO GROWS
tefillah: Prayer
תְּפִלָּה
The prayer noun shares this root, linking prayer with intercession rather than only private devotion.
vayitpallel: And he prayed or interceded
וַיִּתְפַּלֵּל
Numbers 21:7 uses this form when Moses prays for people who confess they spoke against the LORD and against him.
אֶשָּׂא
essa
GROWS FROM
נשא
nasa
Lift, carry, or bear.
“accept” in this verse is essa. The Hebrew says God will lift Job’s face, an expression of favor rendered here as accepting him. The image makes God’s response vivid: Job’s standing is lifted as he prays for the others.
ALSO GROWS
nasa: To lift, carry, or bear
נָשָׂא
This verb supplies the image beneath the promise of acceptance: God lifts Job’s face.
massa: A burden or load
מַשָּׂא
This related noun names something carried, echoing the verse’s image of favor as a lifted face.
THE PATTERN
Intercession can become a path of restoration for people whose wrong is named plainly.
Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD, and against thee; pray unto the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people. Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine.Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.THE THREAD
Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine. The Hebrew phrase he shall pray for thee uses the same פלל (palal) root as Job’s shall pray for you. Abraham is called a prophet and Job is called God’s servant; in both verses, the one whose standing is affirmed intercedes for others.
