What Does Job 9:30 Mean in the King James?
If I wash myself with snow water, and make my hands never so clean;

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
Job’s snow-water image is not mainly about hygiene: “clean” reaches toward being cleared of guilt before God.
THE MEANING
You can picture your hands made spotless, yet the deeper question remains whether you stand clear before God. This verse names the limit of self-cleansing: visible washing cannot make that verdict secure.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie is that enough outward purity can prove you innocent before God.
THE ROOT
וְהִזַּכּוֹתִי
vehizzakoti
GROWS FROM
זכה
z-k-h
To be clean, clear, or innocent; in a causative form, to make clean or clear.
The root behind “clean” can also describe being clear or innocent, so Job’s words reach beyond rinsed skin to the question of being cleared before God. He imagines making himself spotless, but the next verse overturns that hope.
ALSO GROWS
zakh: Pure, clear.
זַךְ
This related form shows the root’s range: cleanliness can mean a state of purity, not just a surface washed free of dirt.
zikkiti: A form of the same root meaning “I have made clean.”
זִכִּיתִי
Proverbs 20:9 uses it in the question, “Who can say, I have made my heart clean?” The shared root links Job’s spotless hands to the deeper claim of clearing oneself.
THE PATTERN
Scripture distinguishes visible cleanliness from the deeper clearing of the person.
Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.THE THREAD
Yet shalt thou plunge me in the ditch, and mine own clothes shall abhor me.The next line takes the washing image to its bleak end: instead of emerging clean, Job pictures himself plunged into a pit until even his clothes recoil. It reveals what verse 30 leaves implicit: washing cannot establish innocence before God.
