What Does Job 9:8 Mean in the King James?
Which alone spreadeth out the heavens, and treadeth upon the waves of the sea.
The analysis reads the King James wording.
King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
What is an impassable depth to you lies beneath the One who stretches the heavens.
THE MEANING
The One who opens the heavens wide also moves across the sea, where no human path holds. The vastness above and the depths below do not place the reader beyond God’s reach.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This verse undoes the belief that what overwhelms you is ultimate, or that the world holds together only through your ability to manage it.
THE ROOT
נָטָה
nāṭāh
GROWS FROM
נטה
n-ṭ-h
to stretch, extend, or incline
“spreadeth out” in this verse is nāṭāh. The verb carries the movement of stretching and extending. Isaiah 40:22 uses it for stretching the heavens like a tent, so the sky here is an expanse opened wide by God’s reach.
ALSO GROWS
nāṭāh: stretch out or extend
נָטָה
Here the heavens are described through an outward-reaching motion.
nāṭāh ʾōhel: stretch or pitch a tent
נָטָה אֹהֶל
The same verb pictures an expanse spread open, like a tent drawn wide.
דֹּרֵךְ
dōrēkh from dārakh
GROWS FROM
דרך
d-r-k
to tread, step, or walk
“treadeth” in this verse is dōrēkh from dārakh. The root for treading also gives דֶּרֶךְ (derekh), meaning way or path. English separates the step from the way it makes; Hebrew keeps their shared root audible, as the sea lies beneath the One whose tread is also the root of a way.
ALSO GROWS
derekh: way, path, or road
דֶּרֶךְ
A way is linked to the act of treading; Job places that act across the sea itself.
midrākh: a place to tread or footing
מִדְרָךְ
This branch makes the image concrete: even the sea’s surface is underfoot.
THE PATTERN
The vastness of the heavens and the force of the waters remain within God’s reach and command.
It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:Thou rulest the raging of the sea: when the waves thereof arise, thou stillest them. And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.THE THREAD
Thy way is in the sea, and thy path in the great waters, and thy footsteps are not known.Job’s verb דָּרַךְ (dārakh, tread) shares its root with דֶּרֶךְ (derekh, way) in this verse. The sea does not erase the way: it is where the way is found, even when the footsteps cannot be traced.
