This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The sale’s destination is part of the violence: the children are sold so they can be made far from their own boundary.

This verse names the violence of turning children into goods and making their separation from home the purpose of the exchange. Distance is not collateral damage here; the sale is organized to put them far from their own boundary. The same pattern is present whenever a person is commodified so their ties to home and people can be severed.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that forced separation is incidental: the verse says the sale is made for the purpose of removing the children far from their boundary.

מְכַרְתֶּם

mekhartem

GROWS FROM

מכר

to sell, to transfer for a price

“sold” in this verse is mekhartem. The verb makes the children the objects of a transaction, and the next phrase names what the transaction is meant to accomplish. The violence includes both the sale and the deliberate severing of their ties to home.

ALSO GROWS

hitmakker: to sell oneself, to give oneself over

הִתְמַכֵּר

The same root can describe a person giving themselves over to another power, showing how sale becomes surrender.

mimkar: a sale, or something sold

מִמְכָּר

This noun makes explicit what the verse enacts: a person treated as an item in an exchange.

הַרְחִיקָם

harḥiqām

GROWS FROM

רחק

to be far or distant; in the causative form, to make distant

“remove them far” in this verse is harḥiqām. The Hebrew uses a causative form: the aim is to make them far away. That makes distance an intended part of the violence, not an accidental result of the sale.

ALSO GROWS

raḥoq: far, distant

רָחוֹק

This adjective names the state the children are being made to enter.

raḥaq: to be far, to become distant

רָחַק

This verb shows the root’s movement from distance as a condition to distance as an unfolding separation.

גְּבוּלָם

gevulam

GROWS FROM

גבל

to mark out or set a boundary

“border” in this verse is gevulam. The verse says they are removed from their own boundary, making territorial separation part of the sale’s purpose. The boundary marks the space from which they are being cut off.

ALSO GROWS

gevul: border, boundary, territory

גְּבוּל

This is the boundary named in the verse, the edge of the place from which the children are driven away.

gaval: to border, bound, or set a limit

גָּבַל

The verb shows the boundary as something marked out, not merely an indistinct place.

Power turns people into commodities and uses exchange to sever their ties to home.

And he that stealeth a man, and selleth him, or if he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death.
Exodus 21:16 · KJVThe verse names the sale of a person as an act of violence in itself.
Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.
Genesis 37:28 · KJVA sale carries Joseph away from his home and into a foreign land.
And cinnamon, and odours, and ointments, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and sheep, and horses, and chariots, and slaves, and souls of men.
Revelation 18:13 · KJVPeople and their lives appear in the same inventory as goods for trade.
Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.
Genesis 37:28 · KJV

Joel’s ⁨מְכַרְתֶּם⁩ (mekhartem, you sold) and Genesis’s “sold” share the root ⁨מָכַר⁩ (makhar, to sell). Genesis shows the sale carrying Joseph from the pit to a foreign land; Joel makes distance itself an explicit aim of the sale.
