THE KEY
The one they cannot recognize is already standing among them; the presence is here before recognition catches up.
THE MEANING
The verse places a living tension before you: the one being spoken of is already among people, while they do not recognize him. John’s immersion in water is visible; the presence he points to is there without being understood. Being near and recognizing who is near are not the same.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that if the presence that matters were truly here, you would already recognize it.
THE ROOT
οἴδατε
oidate
GROWS FROM
εἴδω
eido
to see, perceive
“know not” in this verse is oidate. English “know” can sound like possession of a fact, but this word belongs to the Greek family of seeing and perceiving. The one is physically among them, yet they have not recognized who he is.
ALSO GROWS
eidon: saw, perceived
εἶδον
This form makes the seeing behind the word family explicit, sharpening the gap between presence and recognition.
eidos: form, appearance
εἶδος
This is what is seen; the verse’s tension is that someone is present to sight without being recognized.
ἕστηκεν
hestēken
GROWS FROM
στα (sta), in ἵστημι (histēmi)
to stand, set in place
“standeth” in this verse is hestēken. The verb’s perfect form describes one who has taken his stand and remains standing there. His presence is already in place; the thing missing is recognition.
ALSO GROWS
stēkō: stand, remain firm
στήκω
It continues the same standing idea, bringing out the steadiness of someone already present.
anastasis: rising, standing up
ἀνάστασις
Built from the standing word family, it shows how standing also branches into rising.
THE PATTERN
A presence can be real and near before it is recognized.
And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not.He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.THE THREAD
And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.John uses the same knowing verb for his own earlier nonrecognition, then speaks of the one being made manifest. The verse deepens the distinction between someone already present and someone recognized.
