What Does John 12:16 Mean in the King James?
These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him.

THE KEY
The disciples perceive only when Jesus’ weight comes into view, and then the written word and their actions gather into one remembered meaning.
THE MEANING
You may see and even take part in what you cannot yet perceive; when the weight of Jesus comes into view, the written word and your own actions begin to join. Jesus is Yeshua (יֵשׁוּעַ, Yeshua), from yasha (יָשַׁע, yasha: to deliver, bringing out into spaciousness), so the weight revealed is the nature of deliverance itself.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Not grasping a meaning in the moment does not mean that nothing is being revealed; perception can arrive later, when the pieces come together.
THE ROOT
ἔγνωσαν
egnōsan
GROWS FROM
γινωσκ-
ginōsk-
To know, recognize, or perceive.
“understood” in this verse is egnōsan. The Greek word carries the sense of knowing or perceiving, not merely holding information. The disciples’ perception comes later, when the events and the words about Jesus can be seen together.
ALSO GROWS
gnōsis: Knowing or knowledge.
γνῶσις
It shows that the verse’s “understood” belongs to the language of knowing and perception.
epiginōskō: Recognize or come to know.
ἐπιγινώσκω
Recognition names the moment when what was present becomes legible.
ἐδοξάσθη
edoxasthē
GROWS FROM
δοξ-
dox-
Weight, esteem, recognized worth; δόξα (doxa) carries the sense of weight.
“Glorified” holds the sense of weight becoming visible. When the weight of Jesus comes into view, the words already written and the disciples’ own actions take on a joined significance.
ALSO GROWS
doxa: Weight, esteem, recognized worth.
δόξα
This is the weight that becomes visible in the verse.
doxazō: Give weight, honor, or glorify.
δοξάζω
The verb describes Jesus’ weight being revealed.
endoxos: Honored, weighty, held in esteem.
ἔνδοξος
This related form shows how the same word family links weight with recognition.
ἐμνήσθησαν
emnēsthēsan
GROWS FROM
μνη- / μνα- (mnē- / mnā-)
Memory; bringing something back to mind.
“remembered” in this verse is emnēsthēsan. Remembering here reconnects the written words with what the disciples have seen and done. The English can make memory sound like retrieval alone; the verse shows it becoming recognition as separate pieces meet.
ALSO GROWS
mnēmē: Memory or recollection.
μνήμη
It names the remembering that gathers the earlier words back into view.
mnēmoneuō: Remember or keep in mind.
μνημονεύω
This related verb shows memory as something brought forward into present awareness.
THE PATTERN
Perception often arrives when what is encountered gains weight and the words already present return to memory.
Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.THE THREAD
When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said. The same Greek remembering verb appears here, where what Jesus says returns to mind as its meaning comes into view. John 2:22 makes the next link explicit: remembrance draws the written word and the spoken word together.
