THE KEY
The hands entrusted with everything are about to take a towel, revealing divine authority through service.
THE MEANING
This verse places you before Jesus, who knows that everything is entrusted to him, that he comes from God, and that he is returning to God. In the scene that follows, those same hands wash feet; service does not diminish his authority but shows its shape.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that greatness must protect itself from lowly work: the one who knows all things are in his hands stoops to wash feet.
THE ROOT
δέδωκεν
dedōken
GROWS FROM
δίδωμι
didōmi
To give, grant, or place into another’s keeping.
“given” in this verse is dedōken. The perfect form presents the giving as complete with a continuing result: all things stand entrusted to Jesus. The next scene shows what that trust looks like in action: his hands take a towel and wash feet.
ALSO GROWS
dosis: A giving or gift.
δόσις
It keeps the act of giving visible inside what English can make sound like simple possession.
dōron: A gift or offering.
δῶρον
It echoes the passage’s picture of what is given as something entrusted, not seized.
χεῖρας
cheiras
GROWS FROM
χείρ
cheir
Hand; the means of holding, touching, and acting.
The verse makes authority tangible: all things are placed into hands. The same hands then touch the disciples’ feet, joining what is held with what is served.
ALSO GROWS
cheiropoiētos: Made by hand.
χειροποίητος
This branch keeps the hand concrete as the means by which something is shaped or acted upon.
cheiragōgeō: To lead by the hand.
χειραγωγέω
It shows the hand as a means of guidance and care, not only possession.
THE PATTERN
God-given authority takes shape as care for others rather than distance from them.
For he shall deliver the needy when he crieth; the poor also, and him that hath no helper. But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.THE THREAD
The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand. The same Greek form, δέδωκεν (dedōken), “has given,” appears with the same image of all things entrusted to the Son’s hand. John 13:3 carries that trust into the scene where his hands take a towel and wash feet.
