He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.

THE KEY
The morsel is received, but the decisive verb is “went out”: receiving and remaining are not the same.
THE MEANING
This verse holds receiving and departure together: a person can receive what is offered and still leave the shared space. Night is the scene’s literal setting, and its final place in the sentence leaves the exit under a darkness the verse does not resolve.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that receiving from the table means remaining at the table.
THE ROOT
ἐξῆλθεν
exēlthen
GROWS FROM
ἐρχ-
erch-
Movement toward or away from a point; the compound’s prefix marks the direction outward.
“went out” in this verse is exēlthen. The verb’s root carries the motion of coming or going, while the prefix ἐξ- (ex-, out) marks the crossing outward. The same movement can be directed inward or outward, so the verse’s sharp turn lies in the direction he takes after receiving the morsel.
ALSO GROWS
erchomai: come, go, arrive
ἔρχομαι
The base verb names movement; its direction depends on the surrounding words.
eiserchomai: enter, go in
εἰσέρχομαι
The same movement root, joined to εἰς (eis, into), turns toward an entrance.
exerchomai: go out, depart
ἐξέρχομαι
Joined to ἐξ (ex, out), the root turns toward an exit, as it does here.
THE PATTERN
Night can obscure a person’s way without hiding that person from God.
Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.THE THREAD
When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples.“Went forth” translates the same Greek verb, ἐξῆλθεν (exēlthen, went out), as “went out” here. The shared root names outward movement; the different company and destination give each departure its distinct shape.
