THE KEY
The repeated “in” makes knowing a recognition of shared indwelling: your place in Jesus and his place in you belong to the same life.
THE MEANING
This verse speaks to you from within a shared life: Jesus is in the Father, you are in Jesus, and Jesus is in you. What you come to know is this relationship as lived reality, not merely a fact held at a distance.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that you can only meet Jesus from outside, as a distant observer, dissolves here: the verse places you in him and him in you.
THE ROOT
γνώσεσθε
gnōsesthe
GROWS FROM
γνω-/γινωσκ- (gnō-/ginōsk-)
to know, come to know, or recognize
“know” in this verse is gnōsesthe. The word γινώσκω (ginōskō) carries knowing through encounter, not detached information. Its family includes knowledge and recognition, so the knowing to come is recognition of the relationship already described as mutual indwelling.
ALSO GROWS
gnōsis: knowledge, knowing
γνῶσις
This related noun shows the shared seed beneath the act of knowing and what is known.
epiginōskō: recognize, know fully
ἐπιγινώσκω
This compound highlights recognition, illuminating the verse’s movement from described relationship to known reality.
THE PATTERN
Divine life is known through nearness within, not distance outside.
But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it.That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.THE THREAD
For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. The same Greek knowing root appears here: knowing unfolds from partial recognition toward knowing as one is known. John 14:20 names the relationship that makes that recognition possible, being in Jesus, with Jesus in you.
