This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

Here belief is the far end of a chain: what is given is received, known, and finally trusted as a sending.

As you receive the words given by the Father to Jesus, you recognize that Jesus comes from the Father. That knowing becomes trust in Jesus as the one the Father sends.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the belief that trust is only agreement with a claim from a distance. Here trust grows from words received and recognition of Jesus’ relation to the Father.

ἐπίστευσαν

GROWS FROM

πιστ-

pist-

Trust, reliance, or being persuaded.

The Greek word translated “believed” belongs to the same word family as trust and what is trustworthy. The verse presents belief as reliance that follows receiving the words and recognizing where Jesus comes from, not as bare agreement.

GROWS FROM

ἔγνωσαν

egnōsan

GROWS FROM

γινώσκω

γνῶσις

This noun shows the same family’s movement from knowing to knowledge.

gnōstos: Known or familiar.

γνωστός

A word received becomes understanding and trust.

The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.
Psalm 119:130 · KJVThe word entering the hearer brings understanding, as received words in John 17:8 lead into recognition.
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Romans 10:17 · KJVTrust arises through hearing the word, echoing the movement from receiving Jesus’ words to believing.
So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
Isaiah 55:11 · KJVThe word sent forth carries purpose, echoing the Father’s sending of Jesus and the words given through him.
As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.
John 17:18 · KJV

The same Greek verb for “send forth” appears in both verses. John 17:8 names Jesus as sent by the Father; here that sending extends through Jesus to those who receive his words.
