What Does John 21:8 Mean in the King James?
And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
Even at the edge of arrival, what is gathered still has to be hauled through the remaining distance.
THE MEANING
The disciples are close to land, yet the net is still in the water and moving under pull. The work of bringing the catch ashore remains inside the moment of abundance. You can be near a threshold while what has been gathered is still on its way across it.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse loosens the belief that closeness means completion: the net is still over water, and the catch has not yet reached shore.
THE ROOT
σύροντες
syrontes
GROWS FROM
σύρ-
to drag, pull, or draw along
“dragging” in this verse is syrontes. The verb holds the force of moving something along, not simply the fact that it has arrived. The same verb describes Paul being dragged outside the city in Acts 14:19; here the force acts on the net and its catch as they are hauled toward land.
ALSO GROWS
syrō: to drag or draw along
σύρω
This is the verb whose participle describes the disciples hauling the net.
esyron: they dragged
ἔσυρον
Acts 14:19 uses this form as Paul is dragged outside the city, showing the same root can name forceful bodily movement; here the net is what moves.
πηχῶν
pēchōn
GROWS FROM
πηχ-
forearm; cubit, a unit based on the forearm
“cubits” in this verse is pēchōn. The distance is given in a bodily measure: the cubit is associated with the length of the forearm. The short gap to shore is therefore expressed at human scale, and the same measuring word-family appears in Revelation’s description of the city wall.
ALSO GROWS
pēchys: forearm; cubit, a forearm-based measure of length
πῆχυς
The two hundred cubits make the remaining distance legible through a bodily measure.
pēcheōn: of cubits, the genitive plural form used in Revelation 21:17
πήχεων
The same cubit word-family measures the city wall there, joining this short stretch to shore with a boundary measured at human scale.
THE PATTERN
The final stretch from water to land remains part of the crossing.
And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Jordan. And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore. And the rest, some on boards, and some on broken pieces of the ship. And so it came to pass, that they escaped all safe to land.THE THREAD
And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty and four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel.John measures the remaining distance to land in cubits; Revelation uses the same word-family for the wall’s height and calls it the measure of a man. The shared root keeps both distances tied to embodied scale, from the short stretch before arrival to the boundary of the city.
