What Does John 4:19 Mean in the King James?
The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.

THE KEY
The first thing she sees is not an answer to her question, but the one who can see her.
THE MEANING
You can recognize someone who sees beyond your surface before you understand all that recognition entails. The woman calls Jesus a prophet because his knowledge reaches into what she has not said. Recognition is an opening: you see something real while its full meaning is still unfolding.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
You must understand the whole mystery before your perception can be true.
THE ROOT
θεωρῶ
theōrō
GROWS FROM
θεωρέω
theōreō
to look at, observe, perceive
“Perceive” carries the sense of looking and observing, not merely arriving at an idea. She recognizes Jesus through what he has brought into view; the word holds seeing and understanding together.
ALSO GROWS
theōria: viewing, contemplation
θεωρία
Its sense of sustained looking echoes the woman’s attentive recognition.
theōros: observer, spectator
θεωρός
This word for one who looks makes the visual root beneath “perceive” more concrete.
προφήτης
prophētēs
GROWS FROM
φημί
phēmi
to say, speak, declare
The word centers on speaking forth, not only on predicting what is to come. She names Jesus as a prophet because what he says brings hidden things into speech.
ALSO GROWS
phēmē: report, saying, reputation
φήμη
It shows the same speech-root extending into what is spoken and heard about someone.
prophēteia: prophecy, prophetic utterance
προφητεία
This branch makes explicit the connection between the prophet and words spoken forth.
THE PATTERN
What becomes visible in an encounter lets people recognize the one through whom God’s truth is speaking.
And the woman said to Elijah, Now by this I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in thy mouth is truth. And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people. They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet.THE THREAD
And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.The verb translated “perceive” here is θεωρέω (theōreō), meaning to look at or perceive; the same verb appears as “seeth” in this verse. John carries her recognition further: seeing Jesus opens onto the one who sends him.
