King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The harvest in your hands may continue work you never saw.
THE MEANING
The work coming to fruition around you may have begun in another person’s hands. You receive a harvest without owning the first labor, and your own sowing may ripen beyond your sight. The saying holds because human work passes from one person to another.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It dissolves the belief that whoever gathers the fruit must be the one who began the work.
THE ROOT
θερίζων
therizōn
GROWS FROM
θερίζω
therízō
To reap or harvest.
“reapeth” in this verse is therizōn. The Greek names the reaper as “the one harvesting,” setting that role beside “the one sowing.” The harvest can belong to the person gathering it even when its beginning lies in another person’s labor.
ALSO GROWS
therismós: Harvest, reaping.
θερισμός
The harvest is the work of reaping brought into view.
theristḗs: Reaper, harvester.
θεριστής
The verse distinguishes the person who gathers from the person who sowed.
σπείρων
speirōn
GROWS FROM
σπείρω
speírō
To sow or scatter seed.
“soweth” in this verse is speirōn. Sowing carries the image of seed placed in the ground, with its fruit still ahead and possibly beyond the sower’s sight. The paired roles reveal that the beginning and the gathering need not happen in the same hands.
ALSO GROWS
spérma: Seed.
σπέρμα
Seed makes the future harvest present in the act of sowing, though the fruit has not yet appeared.
sporá: Sowing; seed sown.
σπορά
The word keeps the act of sowing connected to what is planted and later gathered.
THE PATTERN
Sowing and reaping bind labor to fruit, sometimes across different hands and sometimes across time.
They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.THE THREAD
I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours. The same Greek verb θερίζω (therízō, “to reap”) appears in both verses. The next line opens the saying: the harvest can be in your hands while its labor began in someone else’s.
