This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

Philip’s arithmetic prices the need but cannot yet measure what each person will receive.

A need can exceed the resources you can count, leaving everyone with only a little. That estimate names the limit of the money at hand; it does not yet say what each person will receive. Scarcity is spoken plainly here without becoming the final measure of the scene.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The false belief is that what you can currently afford sets the final limit on what everyone can receive.

ἀρκεῖ

arkeî from arkeō

GROWS FROM

ἀρκ-

ark-

Be enough; suffice.

“sufficient” in this verse is arkeî from arkeō. The word names the threshold of being enough, the very threshold Philip says the money cannot reach. Its word family also names sufficiency as something present across all things, opening a wider sense of “enough” than the failed calculation alone.

ALSO GROWS

arketos: Enough; sufficient.

ἀρκετός

This related form makes sufficiency a clear threshold, the point Philip believes the available money cannot meet.

autarkeia: Sufficiency; adequacy.

αὐτάρκεια

This word appears with “all things” and abundance in 2 Corinthians 9:8, widening the question from what money can buy to what can be supplied.

λάβῃ

labē from lambanō

GROWS FROM

λαμβαν-

lamban-

Take; receive.

The Greek verb holds “take” and “receive” together. Philip imagines each person receiving only a little; in the next verse the same root describes Jesus taking the loaves, as the scene turns toward distribution.

ALSO GROWS

paralambanō: Receive; take along.

παραλαμβάνω

The same word family carries the sense of receiving something into one’s keeping, illuminating the small portion Philip imagines each person receiving.

katalambanō: Seize; grasp; take hold of.

καταλαμβάνω

This related form brings out the grasping sense within the broader take-and-receive family.

A visible shortage is not the final measure of provision: what reaches each person can meet the need and leave more besides.

And when they did mete it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; they gathered every man according to his eating.
Exodus 16:18 · KJVThe gathered amounts differ, yet the measure reaches each person without excess or lack.
And his servitor said, What, should I set this before an hundred men? He said again, Give the people, that they may eat: for thus saith the LORD, They shall eat, and shall leave thereof.
2 Kings 4:43 · KJVThe servant sees too little food for a hundred people, but the people eat and food remains.
And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:
2 Corinthians 9:8 · KJVSufficiency in all things opens into abundance that reaches beyond the immediate need.
And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.
John 6:11 · KJV

The same Greek root appears in Philip’s thought that each person may take a little and in Jesus taking the loaves. The action shifts from imagining a scant portion for each person to distributing as much as they want.
