This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The question measures the meal against the crowd, but the verse keeps the meal itself in view.

You can stand in this verse now: something real is present while the need around you looks immense. The question does not deny the food; it asks what it can mean when measured against the crowd. The tension remains open here, before anything is distributed.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie is that a small provision amounts to nothing beside a large need; the verse names its smallness without erasing its presence.

ὀψάρια

opsaria

GROWS FROM

ὄψον

opson

Cooked food or relish eaten with bread; the related diminutive came to be used for fish.

“small fishes” in this verse is opsaria. The word translated “fishes” belongs to the food eaten alongside bread, keeping the boy’s gift within the scale of an ordinary meal. John uses the same fish-word again with bread at the shore in John 21:9, linking the modest food here to another meal scene.

ALSO GROWS

opson: Cooked food or relish eaten with bread.

ὄψον

This is the base word behind the fish-word, placing the fish within a meal rather than presenting it as a separate supply.

opsarion: A diminutive form of opson; in John’s Gospel, a word for fish.

ὀψάριον

This is the form used here and in John 21:9, where fish and bread are also named together.

A provision that looks too small beside a crowd is received and distributed until the need is met.

And his servitor said, What, should I set this before an hundred men? He said again, Give the people, that they may eat: for thus saith the LORD, They shall eat, and shall leave thereof.
2 Kings 4:43 · KJVThe servant measures a small supply against a hundred people, and the answer holds the food in view until it is shared.
And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets full.
Matthew 15:37 · KJVAfter bread and fish are distributed among the multitude, the shared food proves sufficient, with plenty left over.
As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread.
John 21:9 · KJV

The Greek word John uses for the fishes here appears again for the fish laid beside bread at the shore. The shared word links the boy’s modest meal to a later meal already waiting, while the scene around the food changes.
