This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

What the verse calls affliction is a narrowing, yet the voice from the belly of hell still reaches the One who hears.

The KJV’s “hell” renders ⁨שְׁאוֹל⁩ (Sheol, the realm of the dead), placing this cry at death’s depth, not at the edge of mild trouble. Distress can feel like a place closed around you, yet the verse says the cry from there is heard by the LORD. The answer and the hearing stand in the same line.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It overturns the belief that the lowest place makes you unreachable: the verse locates hearing at the very depth from which the cry rises.

צָרָה

tsarah

GROWS FROM

צָרַר

tsarar

To bind, press in, or confine; to be in straits.

“affliction” in this verse is tsarah. The word for distress carries the shape of being pressed into a narrow place. The verse begins with constriction, then places a cry and an answer inside that very depth.

ALSO GROWS

tsar: Narrow, confined, or straitened.

צַר

This related word gives distress a spatial edge: affliction is not only pain, but being pressed into a tight place.

metzar: A constricted place; a strait.

מֵצַר

Psalm 118:5 uses this word for the narrow place from which the singer calls to the LORD and is brought into a broad place, making the movement out of constriction explicit.

קָרָאתִי

qarati

GROWS FROM

קָרָא

qara

To call, summon, proclaim, or name.

English uses “cried” twice, but the first verb is ⁨קָרָאתִי⁩ (qarati, “I called”) while the second is ⁨שִׁוַּעְתִּי⁩ (shiwwaʿti, “I cried for help”). The first directs a call to the LORD; the second voices an urgent plea from Sheol’s belly.

ALSO GROWS

qeriʿah: A calling or oral reading.

קְרִיאָה

The call in Jonah is directed speech, not merely a sound made in distress.

miqra: A convocation or proclamation; something called forth.

מִקְרָא

This branch shows how qara can summon and gather; here the call is turned toward the LORD from a place of isolation.

שָׁמַעְתָּ

shamaʿta

GROWS FROM

שָׁמַע

shamaʿ

To hear, listen, or attend.

“heard” in this verse is shamaʿta. The verse repeats the hearing: the LORD hears the speaker, and hears the speaker’s voice. The answer named earlier in the line gives that hearing consequence; the cry from the depths is received.

ALSO GROWS

shemaʿ: Hear or listen; in contexts that call for response, hear and respond.

שְׁמַע

The shared root holds listening and response together when the context implies action.

shemuʿah: A report or something heard.

שְׁמוּעָה

This branch extends the root from the act of hearing to what is received by hearing; Jonah’s voice is not lost in the depth.

A cry rising from distress is heard and met with a way out, even from confinement.

The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.
Psalm 34:17 · KJVThe cry is met with hearing and deliverance, echoing Jonah’s movement from distress to being heard.
And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.
Acts 16:26 · KJVAfter prayer and song in the preceding verse, the prison doors open and the bonds loosen, echoing release from a place of confinement.
In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears.
Psalm 18:6 · KJV

Jonah’s ⁨שָׁמַעְתָּ⁩ (shamaʿta, “you heard”) and the Psalm’s ⁨שָׁמַע⁩ (shamaʿ, “he heard”) come from ⁨שָׁמַע⁩ (shamaʿ, “hear or attend”). The Psalm repeats Jonah’s sequence of distress, calling, and a heard voice, then pictures that cry arriving even at God’s ears.
