This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The crown’s authority ends at the cave’s entrance: these rulers become bodies seeking concealment.

Even a king’s title cannot make the person beneath it beyond fear or reach. The verse speaks now wherever public authority gives way to the vulnerable body seeking cover.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A crown makes its bearer untouchable; here, kings flee and hide.

וַיִּתְחַבְּאוּ

vayyitḥabbəʾū

GROWS FROM

חבא

To hide oneself, to conceal oneself from view.

“hid themselves” in this verse is vayyitḥabbəʾū. The Hebrew ⁨חבא⁩ (ḥ-b-ʾ, to hide oneself) makes concealment the action at the center of the scene. Its related noun ⁨מַחְבֵּא⁩ (maḥbēʾ, hiding place) names shelter from the same root: the cave is concealment made into a place.

ALSO GROWS

vayyitḥabbəʾū: They hid themselves.

וַיִּתְחַבְּאוּ

The verb names the kings’ movement out of sight.

maḥbēʾ: A hiding place.

מַחְבֵּא

This related noun makes the cave a physical expression of the root’s action.

וַיָּנֻסוּ

vayyānusū

GROWS FROM

נוּס

To flee, to escape.

“fled” in this verse is vayyānusū. The verse gives retreat two stages: ⁨נוּס⁩ (nūs, to flee) carries the kings away, and ⁨חבא⁩ (ḥ-b-ʾ, to hide oneself) makes them disappear. English can flatten this into one retreat, but Hebrew distinguishes escape from concealment.

ALSO GROWS

mānōs: Refuge or escape.

מָנוֹס

The same root extends fleeing into the idea of finding escape.

mənūsāh: Flight or escape.

מְנוּסָה

This noun names the state produced by the kings’ flight.

When danger exceeds their control, public power withdraws into concealment.

When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait, (for the people were distressed,) then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits.
1 Samuel 13:6 · KJVDistress drives people from open ground into whatever cover they can find.
And they shall go into the holes of the rocks, and into the caves of the earth, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth.
Isaiah 2:19 · KJVThose facing a force beyond their command seek shelter in the earth’s hidden spaces.
And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;
Revelation 6:15 · KJVEven kings and every rank of society become bodies trying to disappear from danger.
And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.
Genesis 3:8 · KJV

Genesis 3:8 uses the same verb ⁨חבא⁩ (chaba, to hide oneself) for the man and woman moving out of sight. The shared root links the garden and the cave through concealment, while the different threats give each hiding its own meaning.
