What Does Joshua 12:17 Mean in the King James?
The king of Tappuah, one; the king of Hepher, one;

THE KEY
Each ruler is named, then counted as one: a title and territory do not make power immeasurable.
THE MEANING
Two rulers receive their names, but neither name makes its king immeasurable: each is followed by “one.” The verse gives you a scale for power now, territory and title can still fit within a larger accounting.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the belief that control of a place makes a ruler ultimate: each king remains one within the larger count.
THE ROOT
מֶלֶךְ
melekh
GROWS FROM
מלך
m-l-k
To reign or exercise kingship.
The Hebrew root מלך (m-l-k) links the king to the act of reigning and the realm of rule. The line counts each named king as one expression of authority within a larger whole.
ALSO GROWS
mālak: to reign
מָלַךְ
The ruler’s title shares its root with the act of ruling, so the verse names a claim to reign as well as a person.
malkhut: kingship, reign
מַלְכוּת
This branch names the authority or reign itself, placing each king within a wider reality of rule.
mamlakhah: kingdom
מַמְלָכָה
The kingdom is another branch of the same root: ruler, reign, and realm remain connected.
THE PATTERN
Every human claim to rule remains countable beneath a greater authority.
And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:The LORD hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all.He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.THE THREAD
The LORD hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all.“Kingdom” is מַלְכוּת (malkhut, kingship or reign), from the same מלך (m-l-k) root as מֶלֶךְ (melekh, king). Joshua’s line counts each local king as one; the Psalm places every reign within a greater rule over all.
