What Does Joshua 16:1 Mean in the King James?
And the lot of the children of Joseph fell from Jordan by Jericho, unto the water of Jericho on the east, to the wilderness that goeth up from Jericho throughout mount Beth-el,

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
Beneath “fell,” the Hebrew pictures the lot going out (וַיֵּצֵא, vayyēṣēʾ, “went out, emerged”), tracing inheritance through rising land to Beth-el (בֵּית־אֵל, Bēṯ-ʾĒl, “House of God”).
THE MEANING
A received portion becomes legible in its contours: water east of Jericho, wilderness rising from it, and the mountain of Beth-el. Inheritance takes the shape of a route across real ground, not just an invisible claim.
THE ROOT
וַיֵּצֵא
vayyēṣēʾ
GROWS FROM
יצא
y-ts-ʾ
go out, emerge
The KJV’s “fell” carries וַיֵּצֵא (vayyēṣēʾ, “went out, emerged”) beneath it: the lot is pictured as coming forth into view. From the same root come an outlet and the act of bringing something out, so inheritance appears as emergence into a place that can be inhabited.
ALSO GROWS
mōṣāʾ: outlet, exit, point of departure
מוֹצָא
The root can name a way out, echoing how the allotment is narrated as a portion emerging along a traceable boundary.
hōṣîʾ: bring out
הוֹצִיא
In this causative form, the same root describes bringing something forth, widening the image from a lot emerging to an opening made visible.
עֹלֶה
ʿōleh
GROWS FROM
עלה
ʿ-l-h
rise, ascend, go up
“goeth up” in this verse is ʿōleh. The wilderness is described with a verb of ascent, so the allotted line has vertical shape as it rises from Jericho. The same root names עֹלָה (ʿōlāh, “burnt offering; that which goes up”), keeping the image of rising concrete as its meaning widens.
ALSO GROWS
maʿaleh: ascent, uphill slope
מַעֲלֶה
This branch keeps the land’s rise physical: the boundary climbs away from Jericho.
ʿōlāh: burnt offering; that which goes up
עֹלָה
The same root describes an offering rising upward, extending the verse’s language of ascent beyond the landscape.
THE PATTERN
A received inheritance becomes tangible as a portion with lines and contours.
Notwithstanding the land shall be divided by lot: according to the names of the tribes of their fathers they shall inherit. The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage. In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:THE THREAD
And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, even the selfsame day it came to pass, that all the hosts of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt.Joshua introduces the lot with וַיֵּצֵא (vayyēṣēʾ, “went out, emerged”); Exodus uses the same root, יצא (yatsa, “go out”), for the people leaving Egypt. Here that movement continues from emergence into a named, bounded inheritance.
