So the children of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim, took their inheritance.

THE KEY
One Hebrew verb holds the movement: Joseph’s line inherits as a family, receiving a portion through belonging.
THE MEANING
Belonging here has a share you can receive: a portion comes to Joseph’s line, with Manasseh and Ephraim named as two branches within it. Their names carry a second layer, Joseph (יוֹסֵף, Yosef, “he adds”), Manasseh (מְנַשֶּׁה, Menashsheh, “causing to forget”), and Ephraim (אֶפְרַיִם, Efrayim, “fruitful”), so addition, forgetting, and fruitfulness stand together in the family that receives.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie that every good portion must be earned or seized alone loosens here: inheritance is received through belonging.
THE ROOT
וַיִּנְחֲלוּ
vayyinḥalū
GROWS FROM
נחל
To inherit or possess a share; in its causative form, to grant a share as inheritance.
“took their inheritance” in this verse is vayyinḥalū. The Hebrew verb gathers the action and the status of the portion in one word: they inherit. In its causative form, נחל also means to hand an inheritance on, so the root carries reception and transmission together.
ALSO GROWS
naḥalah: Inheritance, allotted portion
נַחֲלָה
This noun names the portion carried by the verb in Joshua.
hinḥîl: To cause someone to inherit; to give as an inheritance
הִנְחִיל
The same root can describe a portion being passed on, linking what is received with what is entrusted.
יוֹסֵף
Yosef
GROWS FROM
יסף
To add, increase, or continue.
“Joseph” in this verse is Yosef. Yosef’s name echoes יסף, “to add.” Beside the two named tribal branches, the name lets addition take visible form as a family line that expands and receives.
ALSO GROWS
yasaf: To add or continue
יָסַף
This verb is the root behind Joseph’s name, placing addition within the line that receives.
tosefet: Addition, supplement
תּוֹסֶפֶת
This noun carries the root’s sense of something added, echoing the expansion represented by Joseph’s two branches.
THE PATTERN
Inheritance is received through belonging, and the portion may be land, the LORD himself, or a share among God’s people.
And the LORD spake unto Aaron, Thou shalt have no inheritance in their land, neither shalt thou have any part among them: I am thy part and thine inheritance among the children of Israel. And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.THE THREAD
The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.Psalm 16:5 uses נַחֲלָתִי (naḥalati, “my inheritance”), from the same נחל root as Joshua’s “they inherited.” Here the LORD is named as the speaker’s portion, opening inheritance as both what is received and the one who holds the share.
