What Does Joshua 18:7 Mean in the King James?
But the Levites have no part among you; for the priesthood of the LORD is their inheritance: and Gad, and Reuben, and half the tribe of Manasseh, have received their inheritance beyond Jordan on the east, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave them.

THE KEY
A missing land allotment does not mean an empty inheritance: the Levites’ inheritance is the priesthood of the LORD.
THE MEANING
This verse holds two kinds of inheritance together: a share among the tribes, and the priesthood of the LORD as the Levites’ inheritance. Their lack of a land portion is stated plainly, while a different kind of inheritance is named in its place. It speaks now wherever belonging is measured by what someone receives: an inheritance can be real and unlike another person’s.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that receiving a different share means having no inheritance.
THE ROOT
נַחֲלָתָם
naḥălātām
GROWS FROM
נחל
To inherit, possess, or receive as an allotted share.
Joshua uses the inheritance word even as it says the Levites have no tribal land portion. The word can hold an allotted possession while the verse names their distinct inheritance as the LORD’s priesthood.
ALSO GROWS
nāḥal: To inherit or take possession.
נָחַל
The verb behind inheritance makes receiving a share the central idea, even when that share is not land.
naḥalah: Inheritance or possession.
נַחֲלָה
This noun appears again in the verse’s claim that the priesthood is the Levites’ inheritance.
חֵלֶק
cheleq
GROWS FROM
חלק
To divide or apportion; a share set apart from a whole.
The verse places “part” beside “inheritance,” distinguishing a share among the tribes from the Levites’ priestly inheritance. The contrast shows that not sharing one allotment does not erase the other.
ALSO GROWS
ḥālaq: To divide or apportion.
חָלַק
The verb evokes the division of land into shares that the Levites do not receive.
ḥēleq: A portion, share, or part.
חֵלֶק
The same word is used in Numbers 18:20 when the LORD is named as the Levites’ part.
THE PATTERN
Scripture’s language of inheritance reaches beyond land to name belonging and a share received from God.
Wherefore Levi hath no part nor inheritance with his brethren; the LORD is his inheritance, according as the LORD thy God promised him.The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,THE THREAD
And the LORD spake unto Aaron, Thou shalt have no inheritance in their land, neither shalt thou have any part among them: I am thy part and thine inheritance among the children of Israel.Numbers 18:20 repeats the Hebrew words for “part” (חֵלֶק, cheleq) and “inheritance” (נַחֲלָה, naḥalah). It makes explicit what Joshua 18:7 compresses: the Levites have no land share, and the LORD is named as their part and inheritance.
