What Does Joshua 2:11 Mean in the King James?
And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The courage that disappears is ruach, the same Hebrew word for breath, so this verse pictures fear as a loss of inner breath.
THE MEANING
When overwhelming news reaches you, your inner center can lose its firmness and the breath of courage can seem to leave. This verse holds that collapse beside a confession: the LORD is God over the heavens above and the earth beneath. No part of your world lies outside that span.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that earthly threats occupy ground outside God’s rule.
THE ROOT
רוּחַ
ruach
GROWS FROM
רוח
r-w-ḥ
Wind, breath, and the animating force within a person.
Here ruach is rendered “courage,” though the same word names wind and breath. The line lets courage be felt as breath’s animating force: no ruach remains in a person.
ALSO GROWS
ruach: Wind or moving air.
רוּחַ
The same Hebrew word names both the wind outside a person and the inner force whose absence the verse describes.
ruach: Breath, the living movement within a person.
רוּחַ
This sense brings the KJV’s “courage” close to the body’s own breath and life.
לְבָבֵנוּ
levavenu
GROWS FROM
לבב
l-b-b
The inward center of thought, desire, and resolve.
“hearts” in this verse is levavenu. Hebrew heart gathers thought and resolve, not emotion alone. The report reaches that whole inner center, and the next clause says no ruach remains in anyone.
ALSO GROWS
lev: The heart or inward center.
לֵב
It shows that what melts is the person’s inner center, not merely a passing feeling.
levav: The inward self, including thought and resolve.
לְבָב
This fuller form echoes the verse’s movement from a heart losing firmness to courage disappearing.
THE PATTERN
God’s rule encloses both the heavens and the earth, leaving no realm outside its reach.
Know therefore this day, and consider it in thine heart, that the LORD he is God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath: there is none else. And he said, LORD God of Israel, there is no God like thee, in heaven above, or on earth beneath, who keepest covenant and mercy with thy servants that walk before thee with all their heart:God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;THE THREAD
And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites, which were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, which were by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.Joshua 5:1 repeats both images with the same Hebrew roots: the heart melts and ruach is no longer in them. The pairing makes fear vivid as a whole-person collapse, with the inner center and animating breath giving way together.
