And he spake unto them, saying, Return with much riches unto your tents, and with very much cattle, with silver, and with gold, and with brass, and with iron, and with very much raiment: divide the spoil of your enemies with your brethren.

THE KEY
The root for “divide” also names a person’s “portion,” so victory’s wealth becomes a share for the whole brotherhood.
THE MEANING
This living command places abundance in relation: what comes back with you includes a portion for your brothers. Dividing the spoil turns captured wealth into shared provision, extending belonging beyond those who took the field.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
“What I gain through struggle belongs only to me.” The verse includes the brothers in the spoils.
THE ROOT
חִלְקוּ
ḥilqû
GROWS FROM
חלק
ḥ-l-q
To divide, apportion, or share.
“divide” in this verse is ḥilqû. The root links the act of dividing with a portion someone receives: division can create a share rather than merely separate what was whole. Here, the command makes the victory’s wealth a portion for the brothers as well.
ALSO GROWS
ḥēleq: portion, share
חֵלֶק
A share is what division assigns; the command turns the spoil into portions that can be received.
maḥălōqet: division, dispute
מַחֲלֹקֶת
The same root can describe division between people. Here, division is directed toward sharing among brothers.
THE PATTERN
Gains received by some become shared provision when they are distributed through the community.
And divide the prey into two parts; between them that took the war upon them, who went out to battle, and between all the congregation:For who will hearken unto you in this matter? but as his part is that goeth down to the battle, so shall his part be that tarrieth by the stuff: they shall part alike. And laid them down at the apostles’ feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.THE THREAD
Every man also to whom God hath given riches and wealth, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God.Joshua’s “divide” and Ecclesiastes’ “portion” grow from the same Hebrew root, חלק (ḥ-l-q), meaning to divide or allot. What sounds like separation in English also names the share each person receives.
