What Does Joshua 4:16 Mean in the King James?
Command the priests that bear the ark of the testimony, that they come up out of Jordan.
The analysis reads the King James wording.
King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The priests are commanded to carry the testimony upward and out: the verse ends with its bearers leaving the river.
THE MEANING
The verse speaks to you in the moment you carry what bears witness through deep water. The bearers come up and out of the Jordan with the testimony still in their care; the movement continues beyond the river.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that the waters get to keep what you carried into them: the bearers come up with the testimony.
THE ROOT
וַיַּעֲלוּ
vayya'alu
GROWS FROM
עלה
To go up, ascend, or rise.
“come up” in this verse is vayya'alu. The priests’ exit is voiced as ascent: they go up out of the Jordan. The same root appears in עֹלָה (olah), the offering that goes up, linking this emergence to a wider language of rising.
ALSO GROWS
olah: A whole burnt offering; literally, that which goes up.
עֹלָה
Its shared root makes the upward movement of the priests’ exit audible in the word for an offering that rises.
ma'alah: An ascent, step, or upward way.
מַעֲלָה
This branch gives a name to the upward movement that the verse places at the end of the crossing.
עֵדוּת
ʿedut
GROWS FROM
עוּד
To bear witness or testify; in some forms, to repeat or reaffirm.
Testimony is not merely an abstract statement here: it is the witness the priests carry. Hebrew keeps the family of witness, testifying, and testimony close together, so the ark bears witness as it moves with them.
ALSO GROWS
ʿed: A witness.
עֵד
The witness is the living source of the testimony carried in the ark.
he'id: To testify or call as a witness.
הֵעִיד
This verb makes the testimony an act of bearing witness, not only something written or stored.
שְׂאוּ
se'u
GROWS FROM
נָשָׂא
To lift, carry, or bear.
The Hebrew behind “bear” also means “lift up.” The priests carry the testimony by lifting it, so the verse joins bearing witness with the physical act of raising and carrying the ark.
ALSO GROWS
nasa: To lift, carry, or bear.
נָשָׂא
This is the action the priests are commanded to perform with the ark.
nasi: A chief, leader, or prince; traditionally associated with one lifted up.
נָשִׂיא
The lifting sense extends into a title for a leader, while here it describes the priests’ literal carrying.
THE PATTERN
Passage through water reaches its turning point when the bearers rise out and continue onward.
But the children of Israel walked upon dry land in the midst of the sea; and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.THE THREAD
He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.Joshua’s “come up” and the psalm’s “brought me up” share the root עלה (ʿalah), meaning to ascend or go up. The psalm opens the movement further: coming up out of what holds you leads to feet set on firm ground.
