What Does Joshua 4:2 Mean in the King James?
Take you twelve men out of the people, out of every tribe a man,
The analysis reads the King James wording.
King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The twelve are not interchangeable witnesses: one man from each tribe keeps the whole people visible without erasing its parts.
THE MEANING
The whole community comes into view through particular people, one from every tribe. Each chosen man carries a belonging larger than himself, while every tribe remains distinct within the shared witness.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that a people becomes one only when its differences disappear.
THE ROOT
שֵׁבֶט
shevet
GROWS FROM
שבט
A three-letter root whose noun שֵׁבֶט (shevet) means a staff or rod and also a tribe; it can also mean a scepter.
English “tribe” names only a group, while שֵׁבֶט (shevet) also carries the image of a staff and the authority of a scepter. Each man is counted as the visible bearer of a larger people, while the tribes remain distinct.
ALSO GROWS
shevet: staff, rod
שֵׁבֶט
This sense lets the word for a tribe carry the image of something that represents a larger whole.
shevet: scepter
שֵׁבֶט
The same word can name a sign of authority, adding weight to the representative role each man carries.
קְחוּ
qĕḥû
GROWS FROM
לקח
To take or receive.
“take” in this verse is qĕḥû. The command can hold both choosing and receiving: each representative is taken from his tribe into a shared act. A related noun, לֶקַח (leqaḥ), means instruction or teaching, something received and taken in.
ALSO GROWS
lāqaḥ: take, receive
לָקַח
This is the root behind the command to select representatives from among the people.
leqaḥ: instruction, teaching
לֶקַח
The related noun opens a line from the act of selecting witnesses to the teaching their shared sign can carry.
THE PATTERN
A shared whole stays visible when its distinct parts are each represented.
And the stones shall be with the names of the children of Israel, twelve, according to their names, like the engravings of a signet; every one with his name shall they be according to the twelve tribes. And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel:For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.THE THREAD
That this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean ye by these stones? The twelve men chosen here carry the stones that become the sign in the next verses. The selection makes the shared memorial answerable to the whole people, tribe by tribe.
