And Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests which bare the ark of the covenant stood: and they are there unto this day.

THE KEY
The stones turn the crossing’s point of stillness into a witness that remains in the very river it crossed.
THE MEANING
The verse places memory in the middle of motion: twelve stones stand where the priests’ feet stood as they carried the ark. A crossing leaves something visible at the point where passage was held open, so the passage remains tellable now.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that a sign of deliverance belongs only on dry ground, after the difficult place is behind you.
THE ROOT
הֵקִים
heqim
GROWS FROM
קום
Rise or stand; in the causative form, raise or establish.
English “set up” can suggest placement alone, but הֵקִים belongs to קום, “rise, stand”: Joshua raises the stones into standing witness at the place where the priests stood. The verse makes a lasting marker from the same root that names rising.
ALSO GROWS
qum: Rise, stand.
קוּם
This basic form shares the root of Joshua’s act of raising stones where the priests stand.
yaqum: Will rise, stand, or be established.
יָקוּם
The same root describes a matter being established through witnesses in Deuteronomy 19:15.
tequmah: Rising, standing again.
תְּקוּמָה
This form carries the movement from being down to standing again, echoing the stones that make a passage remain visible.
יְהוֹשֻׁעַ
Yehoshua
GROWS FROM
ישע
Deliver, rescue, bring out.
Yehoshua’s name is built with the deliverance root ישע. At the Jordan, whose name carries the sense of descent, Joshua raises a marker: the name and the action hold deliverance, descent, and standing together.
ALSO GROWS
yasha: Deliver, rescue, bring out.
יָשַׁע
This root gives Joshua’s name its deliverance meaning as he marks the place of passage.
yeshuah: Deliverance.
יְשׁוּעָה
The noun names the movement out that the crossing makes visible.
hoshia: He delivered, rescued.
הוֹשִׁיעַ
This verb form shares the name’s root and links the named deliverer to the act of bringing out.
יַרְדֵּן
Yarden
GROWS FROM
ירד
Go down, descend.
“Jordan” in this verse is Yarden. The river’s name carries the verb ירד, “descend,” so the memorial stands inside the descent, not beyond it. The stones hold one fixed point within the movement of crossing.
ALSO GROWS
yarad: Go down, descend.
יָרַד
This verb shares the river-name’s root and gives its setting the sense of downward movement.
yeridah: A descent.
יְרִידָה
This noun names the downward movement within which the stones remain.
THE PATTERN
A material witness carries an event beyond its moment and makes it available for remembrance.
For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Eben-ezer, saying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped us.And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.THE THREAD
One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.Joshua’s הֵקִים (raised, established) and Deuteronomy’s “shall the matter be established” share the Hebrew root קום. The stones become enduring witnesses, making the crossing stand as something that can be recounted.
