What Does Joshua 5:4 Mean in the King James?
And this is the cause why Joshua did circumcise: All the people that came out of Egypt, that were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness by the way, after they came out of Egypt.

THE KEY
Joshua’s “circumcise” is a literal cutting away: the next beginning is marked by removal, where the generation that came out of Egypt has died along the way.
THE MEANING
The verse keeps the cost of passage present: leaving constriction does not keep every traveler alive along the way. It names the men of war among the dead, then places Joshua’s cut at the threshold shaped by that loss.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie that leaving constriction means the cost is over: a whole generation dies before the journey ends.
THE ROOT
מָל
mal
GROWS FROM
מוּל
m-w-l
Cut, circumcise.
The Hebrew verb carries the bodily cut itself, where English “circumcise” can sound like a ritual label. The same root names the act and the body receiving it, so the verse’s new mark is made through removal.
ALSO GROWS
milah: Circumcision; the bodily cutting.
מִילָה
The noun makes the act into a mark carried on the body.
nimol: To be circumcised; to receive the cut.
נִמּוֹל
This form shows the mark as something done to the body, not something it adds for itself.
THE PATTERN
Scripture uses circumcision as a bodily mark and as an image of removing what resists covenant belonging.
Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiffnecked.Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, and take away the foreskins of your heart, ye men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem: lest my fury come forth like fire, and burn that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings. But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.THE THREAD
Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiffnecked.Deuteronomy uses the same Hebrew verb for circumcising the heart that Joshua uses for the bodily cut. The shared root lets the physical mark open onto an inward removal of resistance.
