THE KEY
The LORD’s presence becomes tangible here: the day begins with Joshua rising and the priests lifting the ark into motion.
THE MEANING
The verse speaks in a morning where readiness takes bodily form: Joshua rises, and the priests carry the LORD’s ark. What is sacred enters the day through hands and shoulders, through shared work that can be seen and borne.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that the sacred is only an invisible idea, untouched by physical life: here the ark is lifted and carried by human bodies.
THE ROOT
וַיִּשְׂאוּ
wayyis'u
GROWS FROM
נשא
nasa
Lift, carry, bear.
“took” in this verse is wayyis'u. The priests do not merely transport an object: נשא means to lift, carry, and bear. The same root forms a word for a burden and a word for a chief, letting carrying echo across both what is borne and who bears responsibility.
ALSO GROWS
massa: Burden, load.
מַשָּׂא
The ark is something physically borne, bringing the root’s sense of carrying into view.
nasi: Chief, prince.
נָשִׂיא
This word for a leader shares the root of carrying, echoing the responsibility borne by those entrusted with what is sacred.
וַיַּשְׁכֵּם
wayyashkem
GROWS FROM
שכם
sh-k-m
Shoulder; in verbal forms, rise early.
The verb translated “rose early” is from שכם, also the word for “shoulder.” That sound-shape lets the morning rise echo the act of shouldering a task, paired here with priests physically bearing the ark.
ALSO GROWS
shekhem: Shoulder.
שְׁכֶם
The noun shares the consonants of Joshua’s verb for rising early, echoing the bodily effort that follows.
hishkim: Rise early, start early.
הִשְׁכִּים
This verbal form makes the verse’s early rising part of the same sound-family as the shoulder.
THE PATTERN
The holy moves through lived time in the bodies of those who bear it.
And thou shalt put the staves into the rings by the sides of the ark, that the ark may be borne with them. And it was so, that when they that bare the ark of the LORD had gone six paces, he sacrificed oxen and fatlings.Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.THE THREAD
And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.Joshua’s priests carry the ark; here the same root, נשא, names God’s promise to carry you. Bearing is not only a human duty in this verse: it also belongs to the nature of the One who bears.
