THE KEY
What is set apart for the LORD is not erased; its value is gathered into a new belonging.
THE MEANING
Silver, gold, and metal vessels remain valuable, while their belonging changes: they are set apart unto the LORD and gathered into his treasury. Set-apartness is a change of claim and destination, not the disappearance of what is precious.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse dissolves the belief that what is given wholly to God must be destroyed or made worthless: these valuables are preserved, and their new belonging is made visible by where they are kept.
THE ROOT
קֹדֶשׁ
qodesh
GROWS FROM
קדשׁ
q-d-sh
Set apart; marked as belonging to the sacred.
“consecrated” in this verse is qodesh. The Hebrew names these metals as set apart, then shows that belonging through their destination: they enter the LORD’s treasury. The same root forms the word for a sanctuary, linking what belongs to God with a place set apart for God.
ALSO GROWS
qadosh: Set apart; holy
קָדוֹשׁ
This adjective names the quality that the metals carry in the verse: they belong to the LORD.
miqdash: Sanctuary; set-apart place
מִקְדָּשׁ
The sanctuary shares the root, connecting the metals’ new belonging with a place devoted to God.
qiddesh: Set apart; dedicate
קִדֵּשׁ
This verb makes visible the act behind the verse’s description: marking something as belonging to God.
אֹצָר
otzar
GROWS FROM
אצר
ʾ-ṣ-r
Store up; gather into reserve.
The treasury is a place where value is kept. The verse’s movement ends in preservation: the dedicated metals are gathered into the LORD’s store, not discarded.
ALSO GROWS
atsar: Store up; gather treasure
אָצַר
The verb describes the act of keeping value in reserve, which gives the treasury its function.
otzar: Treasury; storehouse
אֹצָר
This is the word used in the verse for the place where the set-apart valuables are gathered.
otsarot: Treasuries; storehouses
אֹצָרוֹת
The plural form carries the same idea of value gathered and kept.
THE PATTERN
What is set apart for God has its value reassigned to God’s keeping rather than erased.
Notwithstanding no devoted thing, that a man shall devote unto the LORD of all that he hath, both of man and beast, and of the field of his possession, shall be sold or redeemed: every devoted thing is most holy unto the LORD.But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly after this sort? for all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee.I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.THE THREAD
Sanctify unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of beast: it is mine. The same root for setting apart appears in “Sanctify,” and the verse immediately names the result: “it is mine.” Joshua’s metals make that belonging visible through their destination in the LORD’s treasury.
