And ye shall compass the city, all ye men of war, and go round about the city once. Thus shalt thou do six days.

THE KEY
The Hebrew gives two different verbs for circling the city, making the circuit itself the command’s focus.
THE MEANING
The fighting men move around the city once each day for six days. You see a measured approach that keeps the city’s boundary in view, with entry still ahead.
THE ROOT
וְסַבֹּתֶם
vesabbōtem
GROWS FROM
סבב
to turn, go around, or surround
“compass” in this verse is vesabbōtem. The verb addresses the whole group: “you all circle.” Its root keeps the city’s perimeter at the center of the action, so the movement around the boundary is not incidental.
ALSO GROWS
saviv: around
סָבִיב
This familiar form from the same root makes the spatial sense plain: the men move around the city.
sibbev: turned or caused to go around
סִבֵּב
This related verb shows the root’s turning motion, linking the circuit to the act of turning around something.
הַקֵּף
haqqēph
GROWS FROM
נקף
to go around or encircle
“go round about” in this verse is haqqēph. Hebrew shifts from סבב to נקף, while English renders both with the language of going around. The second verb makes the encircling explicit as an instruction, reinforcing the circuit as the work assigned for these days.
ALSO GROWS
naqaph: to go around or encircle
נָקַף
This base form carries the same circling sense as the command in the verse.
hiqqif: he encircled
הִקִּיף
This related form uses the same root for the act of going around a boundary.
THE PATTERN
Encircling can be a deliberate way of meeting a boundary, whether as a repeated approach or as an image of protection.
And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they rose early about the dawning of the day, and compassed the city after the same manner seven times: only on that day they compassed the city seven times.By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days.As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people from henceforth even for ever.THE THREAD
So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city. This next scene distinguishes the circuit from the breach: the men circle the city first, and then the wall falls. The boundary that governs the movement in verse 3 becomes the threshold of entry here.
