THE KEY
The Hebrew root behind “hid” also gives a word for hidden treasure: what is concealed remains in place, not gone.
THE MEANING
What is concealed still occupies a specific place, with the silver lying beneath it. When the search reaches that place, what was hidden becomes a visible arrangement.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Hiding does not make something disappear; the object remains where it was placed, and what lies beneath it remains there too.
THE ROOT
טְמוּנָה
temunah
GROWS FROM
טמן
ṭ-m-n
to conceal, hide, or bury
“hid” in this verse is temunah. טְמוּנָה (temunah, hidden) comes from טמן (ṭ-m-n), to conceal or bury. Related forms can name both something hidden and a hidden treasure. The silver beneath the concealed object shows hiding as placement: it is covered, yet still exactly there.
ALSO GROWS
tamun: hidden, concealed
טָמוּן
This related form describes something kept beyond sight but still located inside the tent.
matmon: hidden treasure, concealed store
מַטְמוֹן
The same root family names treasure kept out of sight, linking concealment with something retained and discoverable.
THE PATTERN
What is hidden remains present at its place and can be brought into view.
Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD.For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known.THE THREAD
They shall call the people unto the mountain; there they shall offer sacrifices of righteousness: for they shall suck of the abundance of the seas, and of treasures hid in the sand. The word rendered “hid” in Joshua and “hid” in “treasures hid in the sand” comes from the same root, טמן (ṭ-m-n), meaning to conceal or bury. Deuteronomy uses that root for treasure held beneath the surface; Joshua uses it for what is concealed inside a tent.
