THE KEY
The hidden thing’s turning point is not its retrieval but its placement before the LORD.
THE MEANING
The verse lets you see the movement from concealment to public exposure: what is hidden in the tent is brought before Joshua, Israel, and the LORD. Being uncovered is not itself restoration; here it stands in the path of severe judgment.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It dissolves the belief that secrecy makes a hidden thing disappear: what remains concealed from people can still be brought into view before the LORD.
THE ROOT
וַיַּנִּיחוּם
wayyaniḥum
GROWS FROM
נוח
To rest or settle; in a causative form, to set or place something down.
“laid them out” in this verse is wayyaniḥum. The verb does more than report movement: it makes the objects settle into a place. The root’s sense of coming to rest gives weight to the scene’s final movement: what was hidden is set down before the LORD.
ALSO GROWS
naḥ: Rested; settled.
נָח
This form appears when the ark rests on the mountains in Genesis 8:4, echoing the movement from being carried to being set in place.
menuchah: Rest; resting place.
מְנוּחָה
This noun appears in Psalm 132:8, where the LORD is addressed as entering his rest; it shows the root can name a place or state of rest as well as the act of setting down.
THE PATTERN
Concealment gives way when hidden things are brought into the light before God.
Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance. For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known. But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.THE THREAD
And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat. The verb for setting the objects down comes from נוח (nuach), the same root behind “rested” here. Both verses use the root for something arriving at a fixed place after movement.
