What Does Joshua 8:11 Mean in the King James?

And all the people, even the people of war that were with him, went up, and drew nigh, and came before the city, and pitched on the north side of Ai: now there was a valley between them and Ai.

This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The people of war reach Ai’s edge, but the valley shows that approaching a thing is not the same as crossing the distance to it.

You stand with a people of war moving toward a city: they draw near, face it, and camp while a valley remains between them. Nearness and separation occupy the same moment; the advance has reached a position but has not crossed the interval. The terrain is part of the encounter, not just its background.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the assumption that being near means the divide is already gone.

בֵּין

bein

GROWS FROM

בין

b-y-n

To distinguish or mark a difference; as a noun, an interval or space between.

English gives “between” as a location, while the same root also carries the sense of discerning a difference. Here the valley is both a physical interval and the clear distinction between the people and Ai.

ALSO GROWS

bin: To understand or distinguish.

בִּין

The valley marks a difference that can be perceived: the people have drawn near, but Ai remains across the divide.

tevunah: Understanding or discernment.

תְּבוּנָה

This branch preserves the root’s sense of recognizing distinctions, which the verse makes visible in the space between the camps and the city.

וַיִּגְּשׁוּ

vayiggəshu

GROWS FROM

נגשׁ

n-g-sh

To approach or draw near.

“drew nigh” in this verse is vayiggəshu. The verb names movement toward Ai, not arrival at it. Its causative form can mean “bring near” or “present,” showing that nearness is a relation someone can enter or create while distance still remains.

ALSO GROWS

nagash: To draw near or come close.

נָגַשׁ

This is the root movement in the verse: the people approach the city, though the valley still lies between them.

higgish: To bring near or present.

הִגִּישׁ

The causative form makes proximity active: someone may bring another near without erasing the space that separates them.

Nearness is a movement with a threshold: reaching its edge and crossing into what lies beyond are distinct states.

And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by night to these: so that the one came not near the other all the night.
Exodus 14:20 · KJVA space between two camps determines how near either side can come to the other.
And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount.
Exodus 19:17 · KJVThe people move out to meet, yet their position remains at the foot of the mountain.
Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.
Hebrews 10:22 · KJVDrawing near is described as movement toward presence, not mere closeness in space.
And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by night to these: so that the one came not near the other all the night.
Exodus 14:20 · KJV

Joshua’s phrase “between them and Ai” uses ⁨בֵּין⁩ (bein, between); Exodus 14:20 uses the same word for the space between Egypt’s camp and Israel’s. There, the interval is occupied by cloud and darkness or light, making the separation an active part of the scene rather than empty space.
