What Does Joshua 8:3 Mean in the King James?
So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour, and sent them away by night.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The pivotal movement is “sent them away”: the warriors are not just gathered but released outward into the dark.
THE MEANING
A confrontation can begin before it is visible: force is assembled, chosen, and sent under cover of darkness. Here the scale is explicit, thirty thousand warriors, and their movement against Ai is openly military.
THE ROOT
וַיִּשְׁלָחֵם
vayishlechem
GROWS FROM
שלח
Send, send forth, release, let go.
English “sent them away” can sound like simple dispatch, but שָׁלַח (shalach) carries sending forth and releasing together. Here the selected warriors are released from the gathered force into a concealed position; the sending is the decisive movement.
ALSO GROWS
shaliach: A sent one, an emissary.
שָׁלִיחַ
The chosen warriors are agents dispatched for a particular task; their sending defines their role.
Shiloach: Sent forth; the name of the spring or pool of Siloam.
שִׁלֹחַ
The name carries the same movement outward: what is sent leaves its source and flows.
shulchan: Table; provision set out.
שֻׁלְחָן
The same root-family extends sending into provision spread outward, showing the range of what can be sent forth.
יְהוֹשֻׁעַ
Yehoshua
GROWS FROM
ישע
Deliver, bringing from constriction into spaciousness; Yehoshua carries the sense “YHWH delivers.”
Joshua’s name holds the nature of deliverance, movement from constriction toward spaciousness. Here that name stands amid a military plan: the verse neither softens the attack nor separates deliverance from force.
ALSO GROWS
yeshuah: Deliverance.
יְשׁוּעָה
This branch makes the deliverance held in Joshua’s name explicit.
moshia: Deliverer, one who brings deliverance.
מוֹשִׁיעַ
The name and its branch describe deliverance as an active bringing out, not merely a label.
וַיָּקָם
wayyaqom
GROWS FROM
קום
Rise, stand, establish.
The root behind “arose” also carries standing and establishing. The verse begins with Joshua rising, then moves toward men being sent into position: the action passes from standing up to setting a force in place.
ALSO GROWS
maqom: Place, an established position.
מָקוֹם
The shared root links rising with a place where something stands.
heqim: Raise up, establish.
הֵקִים
This branch shows the same root moving from rising to establishing something in position.
THE PATTERN
A sending places chosen strength in motion toward a task before its outcome is visible.
Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt. Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.THE THREAD
Joshua therefore sent them forth: and they went to lie in ambush, and abode between Beth-el and Ai, on the west side of Ai: but Joshua lodged that night among the people. The same root שָׁלַח (shalach), meaning send or release, appears again in “sent them forth.” This verse makes the first dispatch concrete: the warriors go to lie in ambush, so the night in 8:3 is cover for a specific position.
