What Does Joshua 9:16 Mean in the King James?
And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The Hebrew uses the same root for “neighbours” and “among them,” so nearness is already presence within shared space.
THE MEANING
A commitment can be in place before the full truth around it is known. What is called “near” is also described as already “in their midst”: discovery names a closeness that was there all along. Recognition arrives after agreement, when the shared reality is already underway.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The false belief undone is that reaching an agreement means the people bound by it are fully known; recognition can come after commitment.
THE ROOT
קְרֹבִים
qerovim
GROWS FROM
ק־ר־ב
q-r-b
Approach, draw near; nearness reaching into the midst.
“neighbours / among them” in this verse is qerovim. The same root describes the “near ones” and their being “in the midst,” collapsing the English distinction between people nearby and people already within shared space. The verse’s discovery is that this closeness was present before it was recognized.
ALSO GROWS
qārab: To approach or draw near.
קָרַב
This verb makes nearness a movement toward someone, echoing the closeness already present in the verse.
qerev: The inner part, midst, or interior.
קֶרֶב
This noun shows how the root of “near” can also describe being within, as in “among them.”
qarov: Near, close.
קָרוֹב
This is the adjective behind “neighbours,” linking their closeness directly to the same root as “in their midst.”
THE PATTERN
Scripture’s language of nearness names presence and relationship, not distance alone.
The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.Am I a God at hand, saith the LORD, and not a God afar off?THE THREAD
The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.Joshua uses the root ק־ר־ב for both “near” and “in their midst”; Psalm 145 uses that same root for the LORD being “nigh.” The shared root lets nearness name more than geography: it can also mean presence in relationship.
