What Does Judges 11:5 Mean in the King James?
And it was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob:

THE KEY
The elders reopen a place for the man whose name means “he opens,” but their need does not repair the rejection that came first.
THE MEANING
When a community that has shut you out reaches for you under pressure, its need reveals that exclusion has not erased what you carry. A summons can reopen a place without repairing the rejection that came first.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that being pushed out proves you have no value or place: the very people who deny Jephthah an inheritance now need his capacity.
THE ROOT
יִפְתָּח
Yiphtaḥ
GROWS FROM
פתח
p-t-ḥ
Open, unclose.
Jephthah’s name is built from פתח, “to open,” and carries the sense “he opens.” Beside the elders’ summons, the name adds an image of a place opening again, while the earlier expulsion remains part of the scene.
ALSO GROWS
pātaḥ: To open.
פָּתַח
This verb is the seed of Jephthah’s name and echoes the renewed access the elders seek.
petaḥ: Doorway, opening.
פֶּתַח
This branch makes opening a threshold; the elders return to the man they had shut out.
pātûaḥ: Open.
פָּתוּחַ
This branch names a state of openness, echoing the place being reopened without suggesting the old rejection is healed.
THE PATTERN
A person pushed aside can be summoned when their capacity becomes necessary.
And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither. This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush. The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.THE THREAD
And Gilead’s wife bare him sons; and his wife’s sons grew up, and they thrust out Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father’s house; for thou art the son of a strange woman. The elders first deny Jephthah an inheritance and drive him out; now they cross that boundary to fetch him back. Their summons changes his place in the crisis, but does not erase the rejection that preceded it.
