THE KEY
The verse’s hospitality carries pressure: the word for “urged” pictures insistence turning a departure into another night.
THE MEANING
A departure meets insistence: the man rises to leave, but his father-in-law presses him and he stays another night. Welcome and pressure share the same moment, while the man’s own desire remains unstated.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the assumption that a welcome is always free of pressure: here, insistence arrives through hospitality and keeps the departing man there.
THE ROOT
וַיִּפְצַר־בּוֹ
vayyiftzar-bo
GROWS FROM
פצר
to press or urge insistently
“urged” in this verse is vayyiftzar-bo. The verb carries the force of pressure that changes someone’s movement. The same root describes Lot pressing visitors to enter his house and a group pressing Elisha until he yields; here it turns rising to leave into another night.
ALSO GROWS
vayyiftzar: he pressed insistently
וַיִּפְצַר
In Genesis 19:3, this same verb describes Lot pressing visitors to enter, linking the scenes through the language of insistence and hospitality.
vayyiftseru: they pressed insistently
וַיִּפְצְרוּ
In 2 Kings 2:17, this form describes people pressing Elisha until he gives way, showing how insistence can alter what happens next.
THE PATTERN
Insistence can redirect a person’s intended movement, making them stay, enter, or yield.
And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.And when they urged him till he was ashamed, he said, Send. They sent therefore fifty men; and they sought three days, but found him not.But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.THE THREAD
And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.Lot’s “pressed upon them greatly” is the same פצר verb used here. Both passages let insistence draw travelers into shelter, and the echo grows unsettling as each story moves toward sexual violence.
