THE KEY
A people can gather as one and still turn that gathered strength against their own kin.
THE MEANING
Shared identity can gather people from separate places into one force, and that force can be turned against those who belong to it. The fracture here is inside the family: Benjamin stands against the children of Israel.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Unity alone does not prove that a people are aligned toward good; a common cause can gather people into conflict with their own kin.
THE ROOT
וַיֵּאָסְפוּ
wayye'asfu
GROWS FROM
אָסַף
ʾāsaf
To gather, collect, or bring in.
“gathered themselves together” in this verse is wayye'asfu. The same root gathers people here and names the ingathering of a harvest: gathering is a force whose direction depends on what it serves. Here, separate towns converge into a single force for battle.
ALSO GROWS
asif: Ingathering; harvest.
אָסִיף
The Feast of Ingathering uses this root for a harvest brought together, showing how the same act of gathering can collect people or produce.
asefah: Assembly; gathering.
אֲסֵפָה
This noun names the gathered group itself, making visible how scattered people become a body with shared force.
מִלְחָמָה
milchamah
GROWS FROM
לחם
l-ḥ-m
To fight or engage in combat.
The noun for battle grows from the verb for fighting, keeping the conflict attached to the people who enact it. The verse shows the gathering taking shape as organized combat.
ALSO GROWS
lacham: To fight; wage war.
לָחַם
This verb names the action contained in the battle Benjamin is preparing to enter.
lochem: A fighter; warrior.
לֹחֵם
The root also names the person who fights, linking the armed force to the individuals who make it up.
THE PATTERN
Collective unity magnifies the aim it serves, concentrating people for a project or a fight.
And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together,THE THREAD
So all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, knit together as one man. Both verses use אָסַף (asaph), meaning to gather, for the opposing camps. Israel is gathered as one man in verse 11, and Benjamin gathers too in verse 14: the root names their convergence, but not what that convergence is for.
