This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The Hebrew calls this a familiar step, yet the chapter reveals that this repeated advance now fronts a hidden ambush.

The verse speaks from inside a recurring confrontation: Israel advances in a familiar formation while an ambush is already set around Gibeah. The lines that follow show this changed arrangement leading to mass killing, so the repetition carries real violence.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A familiar outward pattern means nothing underneath it has changed.

כְּפַעַם בְּפַעַם

ke-paʿam be-paʿam

GROWS FROM

פעם

p-ʿ-m

To beat, strike, or impel; as a noun, a beat or step, and by extension an occasion or time.

The Hebrew repeats paʿam itself, meaning “occasion” or “time”; the same word can also mean a footfall. English smooths the repeated form into “as at other times,” hiding the sense of an action measured out again, step by step.

ALSO GROWS

paʿam: A step, footfall, beat, or occasion/time.

פַּעַם

This is the word repeated in the verse’s phrase, making recurrence audible in the Hebrew.

paʿamon: Bell.

פַּעֲמוֹן

A bell marks time through repeated striking, preserving the root’s sense of a recurring beat.

גִּבְעָה

givʿah

GROWS FROM

גבע

g-b-ʿ

A hill or rounded rise in the terrain.

Gibeah means “hill,” so “went up ... against Gibeah” joins the movement to the place: the attack is literally an ascent against raised ground. The proper name retains topography that English leaves opaque.

ALSO GROWS

givʿah: Hill or rounded rise.

גִּבְעָה

This is the name of the place the Israelites advance against.

givʿon: Gibeon, a related hill-place name.

גִּבְעוֹן

It shares the hill-root, keeping the landscape present across place-names.

A third day can mark a hinge where an ongoing movement reaches a new disclosure or outcome.

Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.
Genesis 22:4 · KJVThe third day brings a place into view after a journey is already underway.
And be ready against the third day: for the third day the LORD will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai.
Exodus 19:11 · KJVThe third day marks the moment when what is expected becomes visible to the people.
Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.
Luke 24:7 · KJVThe third day is named as the turning point in the movement from crucifixion to rising.
And Israel set liers in wait round about Gibeah.
Judges 20:29 · KJV

The preceding verse reveals what “as at other times” leaves out: Israel has already placed ambushers around Gibeah. The visible advance repeats, while the arrangement around it has changed.
