THE KEY
She gives more than the water he asks for, and the feast’s closeness masks the danger already moving toward him.
THE MEANING
The verse gives you a strikingly generous welcome: a request for water receives milk and butter in a noble’s bowl. Yet that welcome sits beside the killing that follows, so abundance alone cannot certify safety.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A generous answer to a need does not, by itself, prove that the giver is safe.
THE ROOT
הִקְרִיבָה
hiqrivah
GROWS FROM
ק־ר־ב
q-r-b
to come near; to bring near
“brought forth” in this verse is hiqrivah. English makes the butter simply appear in a dish; the Hebrew says she brings it near. The word frames the food as an approach, a closeness that sits beside danger in this scene.
ALSO GROWS
qarav: to approach; come near
קָרַב
The same root gives the movement behind her bringing the dish close.
qorban: offering; something brought near
קָרְבָּן
An offering carries the idea of approach, making this provision more than food set down: it is brought close to its recipient.
THE PATTERN
A table can carry deception: food is given while danger remains present.
Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat. The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart: his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords. And he answered and said, He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me.THE THREAD
The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart: his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords. The Hebrew word family חֶמְאָה (ḥemʾah), “curds” or “butter,” appears in both verses. The Psalm names the tension already present in Jael’s meal: something smooth and inviting can stand beside war.
