What Does Judges 6:21 Mean in the King James?

Then the angel of the LORD put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there rose up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes. Then the angel of the LORD departed out of his sight.

This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

A touch reaches the offering, but the fire rises from the rock: the visible messenger initiates the sign without containing its source.

The offering is touched, and fire rises from the rock to consume it; then the messenger passes beyond your sight. The verse speaks to you now: what seems inert can become the place where hidden power is disclosed, and what disappears from view does not erase what the encounter has changed.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It loosens the belief that a sign’s source must remain visible: the fire rises from the rock, and the messenger then leaves Gideon’s sight.

וַיִּשְׁלַח

wayyishlach

GROWS FROM

שלח

To send forth, release, or extend.

The verb translated “put forth” is the root of sending and releasing. The messenger extends the staff, but the fire comes from the rock; the root lets you see the gesture as an opening movement, not the source of the fire.

ALSO GROWS

Shiloach: Sent forth; the name of the waters of Shiloah.

שִׁילֹחַ

The sent waters at Siloam restore sight, showing how what is released can become a means of restoration.

shulchan: Table; an extended place of provision.

שֻׁלְחָן

The branch carries the extending of provision: what is spread out can be received, while here the offering is taken up by fire.

וַתֹּאכַל

vattokhal

GROWS FROM

אכל

To eat or consume.

The fire is the subject of the verb: it “eats” the flesh and cakes. English “consumed” preserves the force, while the root joins fire’s taking-up to the ordinary act of eating, turning what could be food into what is wholly taken by the sign.

ALSO GROWS

okhel: Food.

אֹכֶל

The same root names what sustains the eater; here the offering is instead eaten by the fire.

ma'akhal: Foodstuff; something to eat.

מַאֲכָל

This branch keeps the offering within the language of food, while the fire’s consuming removes it from ordinary use.

Fire marks an encounter by taking up what is laid before it, making divine presence visible through transformation.

And there came a fire out from before the LORD, and consumed upon the altar the burnt offering and the fat: which when all the people saw, they shouted, and fell on their faces.
Leviticus 9:24 · KJVFire consumes the offering and makes the encounter visible through what it takes up.
Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.
1 Kings 18:38 · KJVThe fire consumes even the surrounding materials, displaying its reach through transformation.
For our God is a consuming fire.
Hebrews 12:29 · KJVThe image names divine presence itself through the fire that consumes.
And the LORD spake unto Moses, Go unto Pharaoh, and say unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Let my people go, that they may serve me.
Exodus 8:1 · KJV

“Put forth” here and “let my people go” share the Hebrew root ⁨שלח⁩ (shalach), meaning send forth or release. In this verse the staff is sent toward the offering; in Exodus, a people are to be released, the same movement opens a sign and loosens confinement.
