What Does Judges 6:3 Mean in the King James?
And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east, even they came up against them;

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The seed-root and the ascent-verb place future-making and threat in the same frame: Israel sows, and hostile forces rise against them.
THE MEANING
Your planted work and the force rising against you can occupy the same moment; beginnings do not place you beyond attack. The verse names that intrusion directly, without explaining it away.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that doing the work of planting guarantees protection from attack.
THE ROOT
זָרַע
zāraʿ
GROWS FROM
זרע
z-r-ʿ
To sow seed; the same root family also names seed and offspring.
“sown” in this verse is zāraʿ. The root holds sowing and seed or offspring in one family, so planting is already tied to future life. Here that future is vulnerable at the same moment the raiders rise.
ALSO GROWS
zeraʿ: Seed; offspring or descendants.
זֶרַע
The same root names both the act of planting and the life carried forward, tying this sowing to a future.
zārûaʿ: Sown; planted.
זָרוּעַ
This form describes what has been scattered into the soil, present but not yet harvested.
עָלוּ
ʿālû
GROWS FROM
עלה
ʿ-l-h
To go up, rise, or ascend.
“came up” in this verse is ʿālû. The invaders are described with an ascent verb: they rise against Israel. The same root underlies words for ascent and an offering that rises, revealing the upward motion carried by this plain phrase.
ALSO GROWS
ʿaliyah: Ascent; a going up.
עֲלִיָּה
It makes the motion in “came up” visible: the attackers advance by rising into Israel’s space.
ʿōlah: An offering that goes up in smoke.
עֹלָה
Its name comes from the same rise or ascend root, showing how one Hebrew root can describe upward movement in very different settings.
THE PATTERN
The sowing of life can be met by forces that seek to overtake or corrupt what is growing.
And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel. But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.THE THREAD
For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: it hath no stalk: the bud shall yield no meal: if so be it yield, the strangers shall swallow it up.Hosea uses the same Hebrew root זרע (z-r-ʿ, to sow) and carries the agricultural image into harvest, stalk, and loss. It sharpens the tension here: planting carries a future, yet what grows can fall into the reach of others.
