What Does Judges 7:4 Mean in the King James?
And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people are yet too many; bring them down unto the water, and I will try them for thee there: and it shall be, that of whom I say unto thee, This shall go with thee, the same shall go with thee; and of whomsoever I say unto thee, This shall not go with thee, the same shall not go.

THE KEY
The Hebrew word for “try” also means to refine metal: the water is where what can go forward is disclosed.
THE MEANING
When numbers feel like safety, this verse shows that more can still be too much for what must go forward. The people are tested at the water, and who goes with Gideon rests on the LORD’s decision, not on Gideon’s count. The verse speaks now wherever strength is measured by sheer quantity.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that adding more people automatically adds strength: the LORD says the people are still too many.
THE ROOT
אֶצְרְפֶנּוּ
’etsrefennu
GROWS FROM
צרף
To smelt or refine metal, and thus test it.
The verb translated “try” carries the image of refining metal, where a test discloses what can endure. The water is not just a place to gather the people; it is where the distinction between those who go and those who do not is made.
ALSO GROWS
tsoreph: One who refines metal.
צוֹרֵף
The related noun makes the refining image concrete: the test is a process of discernment.
tsaruf: Refined, purified.
צָרוּף
The branch points to what the testing brings into view: what remains after refinement.
THE PATTERN
Testing reveals what can endure by separating refined substance from what cannot.
The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the LORD trieth the hearts. That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:THE THREAD
For thou, O God, hast proved us: thou hast tried us, as silver is tried. The Hebrew word צְרַפְתָּנוּ (tsaraftanu, “you refined us”) comes from the same root, צרף, as the word translated “try” in Judges. Psalm 66 makes the metal-refining image explicit: the test reveals what can endure.
