What Does Judges 8:23 Mean in the King James?
And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the LORD shall rule over you.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
Rule is presented as one dominion, not a family possession: Gideon refuses it for himself and his son, then names the LORD as its source.
THE MEANING
Human authority does not become ultimate simply because it is powerful or inherited. The verse names the LORD as the authority that stands over you now, beyond any leader’s claim or household line.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that a leader’s power naturally belongs to his heirs.
THE ROOT
יִמְשֹׁל
yimshol
GROWS FROM
משל
mashal
To rule, govern, or hold dominion.
“rule” in this verse is yimshol. The same verb is used for Gideon, his son, and the LORD: the verse names one dominion, whose source is not passed down a family line. The root also gives words for both a ruler and dominion itself, joining the one who governs with the authority being exercised.
ALSO GROWS
moshel: Ruler or governor.
מֹשֵׁל
The LORD is named as the one who holds the governing place Gideon declines for himself and his son.
memshalah: Dominion or rule.
מֶמְשָׁלָה
This branch names the authority itself, making clear that the verse concerns who holds dominion, not only who bears a title.
THE PATTERN
Scripture presents authority as a trust under God’s dominion, not a possession that a human house can own.
And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. For the kingdom is the LORD’s: and he is the governor among the nations. And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.THE THREAD
For the kingdom is the LORD’s: and he is the governor among the nations. The Hebrew word translated “governor,” מֹשֵׁל (moshel), comes from the same root as “rule” in Judges. The root links Gideon’s refusal of rule for his household with the LORD’s dominion among all nations.
