THE KEY
Every man offers what the verse still calls his spoil: giving does not erase where the wealth came from.
THE MEANING
The verse lets you watch a promise become tangible: each person places a captured earring into one open garment. Even as the valuables gather into one offering, their source remains visible in the word “spoil.”
WHAT THIS UNDOES
An offering does not automatically erase the history of what is given; the verse still names these valuables as spoil.
THE ROOT
שְׁלָלוֹ
shelalo
GROWS FROM
שלל
Plunder; valuables taken as spoil or booty.
“prey” in this verse is shelalo. The Hebrew identifies these earrings as spoils taken in conflict. The verse places taking and giving side by side: each contribution carries its source into the act of giving.
ALSO GROWS
shalal: Spoil, booty
שָׁלָל
This noun names the earrings as captured wealth, not simply personal ornaments.
lishlol: To plunder
לִשְׁלֹל
The verb exposes the taking behind the valuables that are now handed over.
נָתוֹן נִתֵּן
naton nitten
GROWS FROM
נתן
To give, put, or set.
“willingly give” in this verse is naton nitten. The doubled wording carries the force of “giving, we will give.” This root also means to set or place, and the following action makes the promise visible as the earrings are cast into the spread garment.
ALSO GROWS
natan: To give, put, or place
נָתַן
The root centers the scene on a concrete transfer, not just a spoken intention.
mattanah: Gift
מַתָּנָה
This related word shows the same root taking the form of what is given.
THE PATTERN
When many people contribute separate possessions, their giving becomes visible in a shared collection.
The children of Israel brought a willing offering unto the LORD, every man and woman, whose heart made them willing to bring for all manner of work, which the LORD had commanded to be made by the hand of Moses. Then the people rejoiced, for that they offered willingly, because with perfect heart they offered willingly to the LORD: and David the king also rejoiced with great joy.And laid them down at the apostles’ feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.THE THREAD
And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house. The earrings gathered here become the gold from which Gideon makes the ephod in the next verse. That continuation calls the object a snare, showing that the meaning of a collective gift carries into what it is shaped to become.
