What Does Judges 9:2 Mean in the King James?
Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, Whether is better for you, either that all the sons of Jerubbaal, which are threescore and ten persons, reign over you, or that one reign over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The speaker makes rule sound like kinship: choose one ruler because he claims to be made of your own bone and flesh.
THE MEANING
The choice sounds simple: seventy claimants or one. The speaker then makes kinship the reason to choose him, saying, “I am your bone and your flesh.” Belonging is made to carry the weight of a claim to rule.
THE ROOT
יִמְשֹׁל
yimshol
GROWS FROM
משל
To rule or exercise dominion; the same consonants also carry meanings related to comparison and proverbial saying.
“reign” in this verse is yimshol. Hebrew echoes governing with comparing: forms from משל can name rule, a likeness, or a proverb. The speaker compresses the question of authority into a comparison, seventy or one.
ALSO GROWS
māšāl: A proverb, parable, or saying.
מָשָׁל
The pitch about who should rule takes the shape of a compact saying that makes one option sound plainly better.
māshal: To compare or be like.
מָשַׁל
The word’s comparison sense echoes the verse’s stark contrast between many rulers and one.
עַצְמְכֶם
ʿaṣməḵem
GROWS FROM
עצם
Bone; the word also carries the sense of self or substance, while the verb can mean to grow strong or numerous.
The Hebrew phrase gives belonging a bodily texture: the speaker describes himself as made of the same substance as his hearers. The word for bone can also mean the self or the thing itself, so the claim reaches beyond a family label toward shared being.
ALSO GROWS
ʿetsem: Bone; also self or the thing itself.
עֶצֶם
This shared sense of bone and self gives the kinship claim the force of common substance.
ʿāṣam: To grow strong, mighty, or numerous.
עָצַם
The root’s sense of increase resonates with the contrast between the seventy sons and the single claimant.
בְּשַׂרְכֶם
bəśārḵem
GROWS FROM
בשר
Flesh or body; the same consonants also form a verb meaning to announce or bring news.
The word for flesh shares its root with a verb for announcing and a noun for good tidings. In a verse that begins with speech sent into the hearers’ ears, kinship and proclamation sound close together.
ALSO GROWS
bāśār: Flesh or body.
בָּשָׂר
The bodily word makes the claimed kinship tangible and immediate.
bissēr: To announce or bring news.
בִּשֵּׂר
This branch echoes the speech that carries the claim of shared flesh into the hearers’ ears.
THE PATTERN
Shared bone and flesh makes belonging a claim of common substance.
And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.Then came all the tribes of Israel to David unto Hebron, and spake, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh. For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.THE THREAD
Then came all the tribes of Israel to David unto Hebron, and spake, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh. This verse repeats the bone-and-flesh claim while speaking to a ruler. The echo shows how bodily kinship can become language for recognizing political belonging and authority.
